There's no airport in Kailua. No train station. No harbor. To get here you'll need to come by car, taxi, shuttle or bus.
From Honolulu International
Airport:
Taxis are available at the airport. The cost is around $60. You can
also make arrangements in advance for a
Honolulu airport shuttle
(call 808-263-1188) to meet you outside of the baggage area with service to Kailua B&B's and vacation rentals. Cost is about $45 for up to six.
Rent-a-cars are available at the
airport. (You can save about 15% when you call the local number and book a car for pickup in Kailua. Be sure to ask about weekday versus weekend rates for the best savings. See Enterprise Rent A Car Kailua.
To Kailua From Honolulu International Airport via TheBus: Cost is $2.50 per person as of 2012. When you board, ask for a transfer from the bus driver. This will allow you to change buses along the route to Kailua.
From the airport arrival area walk across the street into the transportation loading area in the median. Look for the nearest TheBus stop and take TheBus #19 or #20 towards Waikiki Beach and Hotels. Get off at King and Alakea Streets in downtown Honolulu. Walk across Alakea Street to the east side (Diamond Head side) and look for TheBus stop. Alakea Street is one way headed north towards the mountains (mauka). Take #57 or #57a to Kailua-Sea Life Park, Kailua-Waimanalo, or Kailua-Keolu Drive or #56 to Kailua-Kaneohe.
Use your transfer. TheBus #57 will take you through Kailua Estates, Enchanted Lake and Keolu Hills sections of Kailua. TheBus #56 will take you through Coconut Grove and Oneawa sections of Kailua. Both go into Downtown Kailua where you can connect with TheBus #70 into Lanikai or North Kalaheo Avenue to Marine Corps Mase Hawaii (MCBH). TheBus #70 has a very limited schedule; you may want to seek transportation alternatives at this point or call a cab.
You cannot take luggage onto TheBus. You are allowed to take one (1) small backpack or carry on measuring no more than 18" x 24" x 12" that must sit on your lap or fit under your seat. No exceptions.
For TheBus routes, maps and schedule information visit TheBus online at http://TheBus.org or call (808) 848-5555.
By car there are three quick and easy ways to get to Kailua:
Via the new H3 Freeway: At the airport freeway entrance, move to the
left lanes and take the Waianae exit on H1 WEST.
Follow the road
towards Pearl City. As you approach Aloha Stadium, move towards the right side of the freeway and watch for signs to Hwy 78 and H3 to Kaneohe. Take the new H3 freeway through the long Halawa Tunnel north past Kaneohe towards MCBH (Marine Corps Base Hawaii) at the end of the road. Get off at Exit 14 or Exit 15 to Kailua. This is a fast and beautiful new road. We highly recommend it.
Via the scenic Pali Highway 61: At the airport freeway entrance, move to the right
lanes and take H1 EAST. Follow the freeway east and move to the
left lanes. Follow the H1 as it forks left to Honolulu. About a mile
further ahead, the highway merges with Hwy. 78.
Continues
ahead about four miles. Get in the right lanes and watch for the Pali
Highway exit. Turn left to go north on Pali Highway through the Pali
Tunnels for 13 miles to Kailua. This is one of the most
scenic roads on Oahu through the Nuuanu rain forrest. Make a quick stop
at the Pali lookout for fabulous views and photos of the Windward
side.
Via Likelike
Highway 63: At the airport freeway entrance,
move to the right lanes and take H1 EAST. Follow the freeway
east and move to the left lanes. Follow H1 as it forks left
to Honolulu. About a mile further ahead, the highway merges with
Hwy. 78. Continue ahead east about 3/4 of a mile. Get in the right
lanes and take the Likelike Highway exit. Turn left to
go 11 miles north on Likelike Highway through the Wilson Tunnel and
into Kaneohe. Continue north across the intersection of
Kamehameha Highway. Here the road becomes Kaneohe Bay
Drive Highway 630. Continue ahead on Hwy. 630 for
another three miles over the "saddle" into Kailua. We are not
so fond of Likelike Highway but it also gets you here.

these directions for any reason.
